About Naturum Vänerskärgården – The Lake Vänern Archipelago Nature Centre
Naturum Vänerskärgården is a place where the wild meets the welcoming. Through its thoughtful architecture, a seamless transition is created between the exhibition halls and the surrounding archipelago. Here, you have the opportunity to explore everything from life beneath the surface of Lake Vänern to the fascinating geology that characterises the entire region. It is a place that sparks curiosity in explorers of all ages, where nature’s own stories take centre stage.
About Naturum Vänerskärgården
Naturum serves as a gateway to Djurö National Park and the unique Biosphere Reserve of Kinnekulle and the Lake Vänern archipelago. The building itself, also known as the Victoria House, is a work of art in its own right. The wooden façade is reminiscent of the reed beds lining the shores of Kållandsö, and inside, visitors are met by an exhibition that engages all the senses. Here, you can listen to what the fish of Lake Vänern have to say or learn more about the large predators and birdlife that define the landscape.
For those wishing to deepen their experience, the staff offer insights into the area’s distinct geology, which forms part of the Platåbergen Geopark. It is an educational and beautiful environment that makes the complex archipelago nature both understandable and accessible. Large glass sections look out over the water, allowing the exhibition and reality to almost merge into one.
What activities are offered at Naturum Vänerskärgården?
Naturum is more than just an exhibition. During specific seasons, guided activities are organised to add an extra dimension to your visit:
- Minibeast Safaris: A popular activity during school holidays where guides help explore the smallest inhabitants of the land and water.
- Guided Tours: The chance to join walks or excursions focusing on the nature and cultural history of the archipelago.
- Independent Discovery: For families, there are often animal treasure hunts and quiz trails that make exploration fun and interactive.
- Talks and Themes: Throughout the year, Thursday lectures and exhibitions with various focus areas are held regularly.
How much time should you allow?
To get the most out of the exhibition and the scenic surroundings, you should set aside at least one to two hours. However, many choose to spend an entire day in the area, as Naturum is located right next to Läckö Slott and beautiful hiking trails. Since entry to the nature centre is free, you can easily pop in several times during your day trip to Kållandsö.
